Birch Bay Dahlias
Formerly SB Gardens
Our primary direction is breeding new dahlias. We are trying to breed dahlias that
are both show flowers and colorful flowers. Because of this direction we do not have
large quantities of any particular variety of flower. Due to our breeding of new
varieties over half of our production is in seedlings and un-
We have been cutting back on the number of flowers that we grow, keeping
the flowers we use for breeding. The flowers that we find to be prone to disease
we are also eliminating to improve the quality of the new flowers we are breeding.
We have been growing dahlias and breeding dahlias since 1990. We started growing
dahlias at our house just south of Seattle. It wasn't long before we were growing
flowers on a friends property in Mt Vernon, WA. when we needed more space for seedlings
and named varieties. In 1995 we purchased five acres north of Ferndale WA where
we started SB Dahlias. A few years later we changed the name to Birch Bay Dahlias.
We
are members' of Puget Sound Dahlia Association, and Whatcom County Dahlia Society.
We are also members of the Federation of NW Dahlia Growers and the American Dahlia
Society.
We do not sell cut flowers ourselves but we are trying to breed dahlias
for the cut flower market. Our customer list includes many commercial growers who
sell to the cut flower market. We also have customers who are among the top growers
at showing dahlias across the country. Due to our size and the cost involved with
international sales we have stayed out of this area for the time being. When we move
to Ferndale this will probably change.
